The village lies between the coast and the Tuscan hinterland: in a half an hour drive you can reach the cliffs of Castiglioncello and the beaches of the Versilia, or the cit ies of art Volterra and Pisa. The first establishment was built by Federcio da Montefeltro in 1311. It was destination of pilgrims from all over Europe and mentioned by doctors and historians. It grew famous and in 1872 a big thermal establishment was built in neoclassical style by the architect Poggi. Since then it is known as the “pearl of Italian Spas”. The new establishment was built in the 60’s and 1000 guests per day can benefit from the spa. In the 90’s a new building has been built with a rehabilitation centre, a sheltered pool with different water temperatures for rehabilitation programmes, well-equipped gym, magnetotherapy, laser. In 2000 a new Wellness Centre has been opened offering aesthetic treatments and massages, steam baths and Turkish baths. The new big thermal pool has been built at the same place where it was 1000 years before, in order to offer the benefit of its rich and warm spa waters. In the old part of the establishment you can admire the frescoes of the Gran Caffè built in Art Nouveau-style, an elegant place to relax in a refined and welcoming atmosphere.
